In this module, your mission is to analyze a story and share your insights.
You will provide examples of the ideas the author presented and explain what you think about those ideas.
When you use close reading skills, you learn to be curious. You analyze what you are reading. Does it make sense? Do you believe it? When you ask these questions, you are thinking critically. And critical thinking can help you in your everyday life, too. Those skills help you set goals, solve problems, and make sound decisions.
While close reading, you will examine why the writer made certain decisions. You will discuss what they may be trying to communicate. You will also review the context in which the writing took place. Essentially, you will ask the writer questions as you read. Next, you will use their writing to find the answers. Then you will consider your own perspective on these same issues. To get started, you will select one short story to read from three options. Then you will read the story several times, so you do not miss key details. You will develop your thesis of the story and write your paragraphs around your thesis statement. Your thesis is the clear interpretation or purpose for your analysis. You will support each of your main points with an example from the story. However, you will not summarize the story.
