What is the p-value and what is its interpretation?

Instructions: Answer the following two exercises using Excel. Submit your answers and relevant portions of Excel in a Word or PDF format making sure that you adequately show your work and line of thinking.

Exercise 1 (25 points)

Do college students learn better by reading material on printed pages or on a computer screen? 30 students were randomly assigned into two equal groups. In the first group, students were assigned to read material on printed pages whereas in the second group, students were assigned to read the same material for the same time on a computer screen. All 30 students were then evaluated on their knowledge of the material by taking the same multiple-question quiz. The scores of the two groups can be found on the Reading Method tab in the Excel file below. Use the provided data to conduct a hypotheses test to test whether the two reading methods would not yield similar quiz results.

Make sure that you include the following:

a) State the null and alternative hypotheses.

b ) What is the observed statistic and what does it mean?

c) What is the p-value and what is its interpretation?

d ) Is there a difference between the two reading methods after all? Yes or no and explain.

Exercise 2 (25 points)

In a hypothetical study, the efficacy of a cholesterol drug is being explored. The cholesterol level of 24 individuals without taking any drug for cholesterol was measured. They were then prescribed and took the cholesterol drug for one month and after that their cholesterol levels were measured again. The data appears on the Cholesterol Tab before on the Excel file located below.

Is the cholesterol drug effective? Use Excel to conduct this hypotheses test. Make sure that you include the following:

a) State the null and alternative hypotheses.

b ) What is the observed statistic and what does it mean?

c) What is the p-value and what is its interpretation?

d ) Is the drug effective after all? Yes or no and explain.
