Family and Group Social Work Skills and Competencies
Many skills and competencies make effective group and family social workers. Group social workers create and provide sessions tailored to the group’s needs using experimental and quasi-experimental methods to analyze the success of group objectives (Toseland & Rivas, 2017). Utilizing these helps to understand the group dynamics and obtain feedback to better their treatment while ensuring their needs are met in a culturally competent way.

Family social workers must build trusting relationships with families, set professional boundaries, and provide them with tools and resources to overcome their challenges. Many families want social workers who understand their family dynamics while providing safe spaces to address their situations.

Similarities and Differences

These skills are similar to those needed to help and assist clients in group or family sessions. These skills are utilized in most settings to build on client-to-social worker relationships. They help promote communication, empathy, and the ability to address their situations while providing interventions, especially since both settings need to address group dynamics. These skills differ because family sessions are tailored to the family’s pre-existing needs or issues (2015). However, group sessions can have individuals who refuse to participate, which may hinder the group dynamics.

Clients need social workers who are compassionate, empathetic, and actively listen, as this helps them feel heard and validated while building trust and creating a safe, welcoming space for them. Some skills will need adjustments to ensure all interventions or treatments are accurate while helping them address and overcome their situations.
