Reflection is a vital part of community-based learning, allowing interns to look back on, think critically, and learn from their experiences. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the progress (and make adjustments if necessary) of the internship against expectations and the learning objectives. It is also for students to reflect on significant activities and experiences, and begin to assess the value of the internship and its impact.
Your internship journal will be an excellent resource for this assignment.
Typed, at least 1,000 words (must include the word count at the bottom), 12 point, Times New Roman font, double spaced, and submitted via TurnItIn under the assignments section of the course. Please only upload/submit a .docx file. Students must cite information (including websites, agency manuals, etc.). Papers not cited correctly will be considered plagiarized, and students will be penalized for academic dishonesty. For professional and academic reasons, you must always cite information from a source (you need to give them credit…).
The internship is about you and your experiences – so, yes, you can (and should) use “I” and write in the first person. And, it is also a professional and academic paper, so it should be written as such. For example: use professional language and grammar, support your assertions with rationale/evidence (e.g., if you say an agency is under-funded or under-staffed, explain why), and cite your sources (e.g., if you pull an agency’s mission statement from their website). It needs to be a formal paper (as opposed to an informal free-writing assignment or journal entry). Therefore, you should also avoid certain things – for example: rhetorical questions, slang, and contractions (don’t, it’s, they’re, etc.) – instead, spell out both words (do not, it is, they are, etc.).
Students must receive a minimum grade of .75 (out of 1).
For students interning at an agency for the FIRST time – the suggested guidelines for the mid-term paper are as follows:
Nature, organization, function, and responsibility of the agency.
Responsibilities, schedule, and nature of intern assignments.
How are you doing on your learning objectives? Explain.
What are the two most important lessons you have learned?
Record significant activities and experiences that have made a lasting impression.
Describe expectations. Is the internship fulfilling these expectations thus far? Why or why not?
