Project 1: Sexuality and Music

Project Overview: Students will explore how sexuality is expressed in music across different cultures. They will choose one of the following case studies: K-pop in South Korea or Hip-Hop in the United States. Each student will select specific artists and songs to study and highlight.
Project Requirements:

Case Study Selection: Hip-Hop in the United States.
Research: Conduct comprehensive research on the chosen case study, focusing on:

Artists and Songs: Select specific artists and songs that exemplify how sexuality is expressed in the chosen genre.
Cultural Context: Explore the cultural background and societal norms that influence the portrayal of sexuality in the music.
Positive and Negative Views: Analyze how music communicates both positive and negative views and practices related to sexuality.
Paper: Write an 8-page paper that includes:
(Sexuality, listen to different songs by different artists and groups and try to figure out where the theme of sexuality appears and figure out what direction you want to take. It can be more on an activist level of sexuality like attraction or romance, different themes or darker themes like what you might find discriminatory or appear chauvinistic. It can be sexuality in race and gender or ethnicity and gender. It can be on explicit lyrics. Take into account visuals and concerts)
(You can involve other media not just music into your research like social media, books written on the genres, different news articles that are contemporary or recent/past in terms of the sexual theme you are looking at. Get focused on the regional vibe that your artists are coming out of, like the subculture of the hip-hop community like east coast or west coast or U.S. overall depending on what you choose to study like the songs, topics, expressions. Feel free to get specific, for example rap or trap, stick to the United States. You can look at social issues, politics, personal growth, or conscious hip-hop and can go back to seventies or eighties, so you have a lot of freedom. The important thing is to stick to the theme so that you are not all over the place and that you have a good thesis statement.)

Analysis of selected artists and songs.
Discussion on the portrayal of sexuality in the music.
Examination of both positive and negative views communicated through the music.
Conclusion summarizing findings and personal insights.
The paper must be in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced, and submitted as a Word document or PDF file. Minimum of 10 References cited in APA format (the references do count towards the 8 pages of writing).
For the Multimedia Presentation: Create a slideshow using PowerPoint or Google Slides that presents the music and/or videos on the case study. It should be at least 8 slides minimum. (you can give links or embed some of the music, images, photos, videos, whatever you wish to share that explores your case study)
